Hurricane rising, aimed at devastated Haiti

Carol Forsloff - The unstable situation in the Caribbean and Atlantic has brought with it a tropical storm that became a tropical depression on Wednesday.  Experts believe that Hurricane Tomas will gain strength and hit Haiti as a Category 1 Hurricane, as the island is now on red alert.

It is expected Tomas will be a  Class 1 Hurricane, according to weather reports, before reaching the southern region of Haiti on Thursday night or early Friday.  By Saturday the country expects strong winds and rain, accompanied with high seas along the shoreline.

The island has been put on red alert with warnings given throughout the island.

Forecast for Thursday: Rain and storms in the south region of the country with a strengthening of the wind on Friday. Torrential rains and strong wind are expected on the island.

Experts worry that the torrential rain will bring increased problems to a country already on its knees from the earthquake of January 12, 2010, thousands without shelter and limitations of supplies in the wake of the earthquake that occurred less than a year ago and an ongoing, and worsening, cholera outbreak.
