Kathryn Shepherd — Dry skin results when the external layer of skin is deprived of water. When the outer layer is moistened, it creates a barrier and keeps out the germs, allergens, and environmental irritants. When the skin is dried, it soaks good amount of water and the protective function is diminished.
In normal condition, the water evaporation process is slow, which does not demand for more water in a short period. When the demand of water is higher than the providing resources, then the skin turns dry. Usually, the dry skin cannot be considered harmful. However, after much ignorance, it may lead to some complications such as skin infections and inflammation. Also, it may lead to eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, and ichthyoids.
Most of the time, the dry skin can be cured with some useful moisturizers and other related products. If it still persists, then it becomes important to consult with the health practitioner. Some common causes are as follows:
1. Hot water is one of the biggest causes of dry skin. Therefore, always prefer to take bath in warm water instead of hot water. Bathe at least for 5-10 minutes in a day.
2. Cold weather is also a common cause. In winter, use of centralized heating drops the humidity level of aiding condition which dries the skin.
3. The hot dry air leads to skin dryness. The hot dry air is found in desert areas. Therefore, in the desert areas, it is fruitful to use air conditioner, since it removes the water level from the air which is a cause of dry environment and contribute to dry skin.
4. Sun heat also makes a big contribution to dry skin. However, the ultra-violet rays coming from the sun damage the skin. It may even lead to breaking down of collagen, elasticity of fibers, and sagging and wrinkled skin.
5. There are some soaps and cosmetics in which some ingredients can cause irritation and dry skin. In young age, the use of cosmetics may cause premature aging of the skin.
6. According to age, the ability to produce oil and blood circulation is diminished. Cellular maintenance processes also get slower and skin becomes thin. All this leads to reduce the water content and makes it harder for the body to retain the oil.
7. Lack of exercise is also one of the reasons underlying dry skin, since the body cells does not work faster as expected.
So how to prevent dry skin? Here are few tips to reduce dryness:
- It is more fruitful to use the humidifier, which replenishes the water in the air.
- Have healthy diet, rich in fiber and omega-3 fatty acids.
- Have a sound and adequate sleep.
- Despite all, it is essential to do exercise everyday.
- Outfits must be made of natural fibers such as cotton.
- Take a 5-10 minutes bath at least in a day.
- Always take bath with natural soaps; olive oil based soaps should be preferred.
- Using moisturizers may get rid of this problem.
