How to keep your pets safe from police and public

Kathryn Shepherd — Pets are important part of our lives. Even the various studies conducted on pets have confirmed that pets can offer various emotional and health benefits. So it becomes our duty to keep them safe from various factors concerning people and public. Here are various safety tips to keep your pets safe from police and public:

Do not leave your dog in a parked car in hot weather. It is illegal as well as totally unsafe for the pets and it causes severe injury to your pet. If it’s 70 degrees outside, then the temperature inside the car can be around 110 degrees. So if you see a dog suffering in a parked car, call the concerned welfare department immediately.

If your pet is not allowed inside the house, make sure you keep proper care of them outside the house. Always keep the water bowls filled.

The dogs in a car must be secured, otherwise you can be charged under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act. For example, if the dog is sitting in your lap, then in case of any collision, the air bag can cause you and your dog severe injuries.

The motorists who are driving with pets caged behind their vehicles need to follow certain safety standards like the cage or barrier must be properly installed, otherwise you can be charged under the law.

Having a secured kennel or crate installed in your vehicle can decrease the risk of serious injuries in case of collision.

Do not leave your pet all alone in your yard or somewhere else outside your home; it takes a minute or even less for someone to steal your pet.

Don’t tie up your dog outside stores, restaurants, or office.

Do spay and neutering of your pets as it helps avoid the risk of them being stolen by potential breeders and also reduces pound seizure.

ID tags, collars, and licenses are must for your pet. It greatly reduces the risk of being stolen and even helps in tracing them down. These work as their identification proof. It also helps them being caught by members of the law.

Microchip is another device that can help you trace your pet. It’s a permanent radio frequency identification chip having unique number and owner’s name on it.

Tattooing your dog is another way of securing them. It kind of works as an identification mark. Vibrator tattoos work just as simple tattoos for humans.

Properly training your pets is also a very good way of securing them in case they get lost.

So it is in best interest to keep your companion safe and secure by adhering to above guidelines; as they say, prevention is always better than cure.
