GHN — The Worth of Dreams The Value of Dreamers, an audiobook based on Ken La Salle’s first year of columns on the Recovering The Self website, recently climbed to #5 on the iTunes Self-Helf/Self-Development charts in Finland, beating out such perennial favorites as Donald Trump and Tony Robbins. The Worth of Dreams The Value of Dreamers was La Salle’s first audiobook, which he recorded himself.
“This all goes back to my trailer for Climbing Maya,” La Salle said. “So many people liked the way my voice sounded, I realized I was letting my years as an actor go to waste.” Ken La Salle was an active actor in the southern California theater scene early in the last decade, also with appearances in independent film. “I also figured nobody else would understand the intention behind my words as well as I and thought it might be an added bonus for me to read it. After all, even with the additional content, the ebook wasn’t that different from reading the columns. But hearing me read them, I figured, changed things up a bit.”
In addition to the release of The Worth of Dreams The Value of Dreamers, this year saw the release of Ken La Salle’s philosophical memoir on success, Climbing Maya. When La Salle, who is also a writer of fiction and of plays for the stage, was asked the significance, he replied, “It just goes to show you can’t limit your dreams. I mean, I always thought I would begin my writing career with a comedy, though I’ve also had some luck getting a few comedies produced around Los Angeles. I only wrote my more philosophical work because of the passion I felt for the subject matter, not because I expected a return.” But even with the success of The Worth of Dreams The Value of Dreamers, which discusses the experience of pursuing your dreams, and Climbing Maya, La Salle continues to write fiction, with novels currently being pitched to publishers by agents at the Corvisiero and Sullivan Maxx Literary Agencies.
What is his future in audiobooks? When asked, La Salle is enthusiastic. “Oh, I had a great time recording it, even if I do grow tired of the sound of my own voice. I’ve already begun recording my next audiobook, which is based on my novel, Daughter of a One-Armed Man. I think any opportunity to connect to your audience is superb. In a market where book signings and readings are so difficult to set up (LA is notorious), that’s why I write for sites like Recovering The Self.”
