assistive technology links can be accessed with new technology[/caption]Marsha Hunt---For years persons with disabilities had few options or interaction with others or ways to meet personal needs, however new technology allows them increased support to accommodate functions they otherwise not be able to perform.
The computer offers many opportunities for everyone, and technology opens the door to those with limited or no use of the hands to be able to experience a world of ideas and adventure, albeit in vicarious ways.
One of those new devices is called the Lucy 4 Keyboard. It is operated by the user who places a battery-operated laser pointer on top of glasses or a special headband. Then the individual is able to select keys on a stand-up keyboard. It was invented by Janine, an individual with cerebral palsy, to provide opportunities for individuals with limited upper body capabilities.
According to those who have studied and used the device, it does remarkably well in offering persons with disabilities new opportunities.
A YouTube video demonstrates how the keyboard changed one person's life and brings a clear example of the benefits of technology in helping those with disabilities become increasingly capable of meeting personal and social needs.
