Human trafficking of gypsies said to be serious problem in Bulgaria

Discrimination against gypsies has been a problem in Europe for hundreds of years. Hitler had them killed along with the Jews, and countries have blocked their immigration. Now it has been found that they are often the victims of human trafficking, as noted occurs all too frequently in Bulgaria.

An organization formed through the Council of Europe that calls itself Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings (GRETA) observes that Roma people are vulnerable especially because they are poor and often excluded from social communities. They suffer from high levels of unemployment and very difficult living conditions, so Roma women and children often become victims of human slavery.

A study sponsored by GRETA observes, “There is a need for a coordinated approach towards the problems in the Roma community, involving all relevant institutions and aiming at improving their integration and access to education, health care and social assistance as an ultimate prevention measure against trafficking in human beings.”

October 18 is the European Day against Human Trafficking
