Ernest Dempsey--There is always a lot to do to save life and Mother Nature from the ignorance and/or destructive advances of our human race But then some of us are given to amelioration, in word and spirit. Following are some good news of achievements gained in November 2011. Courtesy of Care2.
Australian Sharks: Owing to the anti-cull campaign of activist Ryan Kempster, Western Australia’s government has ordered public safety measures instead of shark culls to keep the local population safe from shark attacks. The government is investing more than $13 million for this purpose.
Keystone XL Pipeline: The potentially threatening Keystone XL Pipeline Project of Big Oil will now be reviewed by the State Department after President Obama took notice of the public concern surrounding the pipeline’s environmental impact. Some 15,000 Americans had encircled the White House a week ago to express their worries about the project.
Sudanese Journalists: Ngor Garang and Dengdit Ayok of the Destiny newspaper, South Sudan, have been freed by government forces on November 19 after two weeks of detention on account of criticizing the country’s President in an article published in their paper.
Fur-Free Hollywood: Hollywood takes the lead! Fur products are going to be banned in Hollywood as the City Council voted 3-1 against use of fur in the city. Hollywood has become the first city to pass this ban on fur which is expected to take effect in September 2013.
Tony is Free: Tony, a Siberian-Bengal tiger has been freed from his concrete prison at the Tiger Truck Stop in Grosse Tete, LA, by court orders. In addition, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) has been barred from issuing any more permits to the Tiger Truck Stop for keeping tigers.
