Learning to love the night shift

Sharon Smith — If you have recently been given the news that you'll be moving to third shift, don't sweat it. There's little doubt that Night Shiftyour initial reaction will be one of panic and dread; but it's only because you've never had the wonderful experience of working nights. There's no arguing that it can be difficult to get your body adjusted to your new schedule but, if you keep the benefits in mind and your attitude positive, you'll learn to love the night shift as must as others do. Here's why:

1. Down Time

How many people do you want to know that want to work with the boss breathing down their neck? The night shift is typically more laid-back, allowing you to work at your own pace; as long as you're getting the job done, of course. For some people, the night shift feels like down time when compared to the hustle day shift. While you won't enjoy as much relaxation as a nurse as you would in another occupation, you'll still find that the night shift may be less hectic in your department.

2. Differential

Did you know that people on the night shift are often paid a differential? While you may get as little as a quarter an hour, that can be a tank of gas at the end of the month. Many financial experts, however, suggest putting whatever you earn for your differential into a savings account. If you make an extra $50 a month, thanks to your differential, that's $600 a year in a savings account.

3. Free Days

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to make a doctor's appointment without having to look at your work schedule or take a day off? If you work the night shift, your days are free. There will be no more missed sporting games, no more having to decline a lunch invitation, and you can shop when everyone else is at work. Additionally, if necessary, you can adjust your sleep schedule to allow you to spend more time with friends, make appointments, or get your shopping done.

4. Get a Life

Are you thinking of going to graduate school? Have you wanted to volunteer with a charity organization but haven't had the time? Perhaps you want to learn a new craft or hobby. If you've dreamed of having a life outside of work, now you can. Working the night shift keeps your days open and, because your house will typically be empty, you can do anything that you want to do. You'll have time to study; you can take up that new hobby; or you can walk dogs in the morning. Anything that you've thought of doing can now be done.

5. Easier Commute

If you've ever had to fight rush hour traffic, or leave your house an hour early to avoid rush hour traffic, you'll love working at night. Consider that you'll never sit through bumper-to-bumper traffic on your way to or from work again and you'll quickly understand why commuters love night shift.

You don't have to fall in love with the idea of working at night immediately. Do try, however, to keep an open mind. There are people who choose to work night shift simply because they love it, and you may find yourself in this group of people after you make the adjustment.
