Tobacco finds electronic cigarettes a new way to peddle poison

Editor, GHN - What are electronic cigarettes and what makes them sought after by some?  Here are the details from their manufacturers as well as the FDA statement about their risks and essentially poison.

Cigarette addiction can lead to serious health problems, as evidence since the 1960's and the surgeon general's various warnings that have been ongoing since then.

Well one outfit suggests ,"the electronic cigarette has become one of the most sought after items in the United States by smokers. With a large percentage of the population still addicted to cigarettes, the electronic cigarette offers smokers an alternative that is both cleaner, cheaper, and more convenient than traditional cigarettes are. Non-smokers are also starting to take notice of the products and are purchasing them for their friends and family members who smoke."

Now what would this alternative be for?  Is it to help people cut down smoking and does it give a buzz?  What's the appeal after all, from looking hip to getting some bio-feedback somewhere?

One electronic cigarette company describes the elements of this electronic cigarette gimmick and its associated items.  The company says it includes a square metal carrying case that doubles as a charger, 2 rechargeable micro batteries, 2 micro atomizers, a USB cord for charging, and 10 regular strength tobacco flavored refill cartridges. It includes several innovations that other e-cigarette kits simply do not have; they have taken old designs and made vast improvements upon them.  Doesn't that sound great, all technologically modern?

The tobacco flavor is part of the e-cigarette as alcohol flavor is put in some foods, like wine in cooking.  Is that the idea?

Now for those who haven't been with this fad, check out the forum where people talk about electronic cigarettes and discuss their value personally and all matters related to this unique brand of lifestyle.  But in researching this business, it's difficult to see the gain of this idea, because there is little here that says these are useful as replacements for cigarette addiction.  It seems to be the taste and the idea of looking "cool."  But they call it the modern alternative to tobacco cigarettes.

So is this a transient idea or will people who want to get off the tobacco addiction simply find another addictive device.  It's hard to tell from reading when one examines the ideas presented.

In other words, what are they for and will they reduce cigarette smoking that can cause cancer?

Here is the official skinny from the FDA.

"FDA notified healthcare professionals and patients that a laboratory analysis of electronic cigarette samples has found that they contain carcinogens and toxic chemicals such as diethylene glycol, an ingredient used in antifreeze. Electronic cigarettes, also called “e-cigarettes,” are battery-operated devices that generally contain cartridges filled with nicotine, flavor and other chemicals. The electronic cigarette turns nicotine, which is highly addictive, and other chemicals into a vapor that is inhaled by the user. These products are marketed and sold to young people and are readily available online and in shopping malls. They are also available in different flavors, such as chocolate and mint, which may appeal to young people."

A press release to the media for the purpose of pushing electronic cigarettes finds the need for fact-checking.

And the facts say there are risks to consumers that electronic cigarette manufacturers neglect to mention in their hype.   The tobacco companies find a way to sell their stuff to unsuspecting folk packaged in a whole different way, another way to package poison according to the FDA.
