research from the University of Alberta shows that oral sex is common

But these are changing times, and recent research tells us that oral sex is a common activity for young women.
This
is the 21st century, and those activities, attitudes and discussions
that were forbidden in earlier times are thought nothing of today.

Research
author Brea Malacad says oral sex has become part of the sexual
revolution that is the 21st century. Furthermore she says that most sex
educators, market researchers and others are behind the curve in terms
of the acceptance of and discussion about oral sex. She says they need
to catch up.

“From
my study, all of the women who had engaged in sexual intercourse had
also engaged in oral sex as well,” said Malacad, who recently published
the findings in the European Journal of Contraception and Reproductive Health Care. “This data tells us that oral sex is becoming very much a part of most young people’s sexual repertoire.”

Malacad’s
research shows how attitudes and behaviors of young women have changed.
Her research indicates that 50% of young women find oral sex less
intimate than intercourse, but 41% do not. Still it is not the first
date activity or the good night kiss of the 1950's.

date activity or the good night kiss of the 1950's.
In this case, the results of the research surprised even Malacad.
“Both
intercourse and oral sex were associated with mostly positive emotions
overall, which suggests that most young women are engaging in these
activities because they enjoy them,” said Malacad. “Based on the results
of my study, there is a percentage of women (just over 30 per cent) who
feel powerful when performing fellatio. Apparently some women find it
empowering and believe that it can wield a lot of power.”

Despite
these findings, Malacard tells us most girls are not engaging in
rampant sexual activities and that of a sample of 181 participants ages
18 to 25 many had only one sexual partner after becoming sexually
active. Also 25 percent of participants were still virgins.

Mixed
messages sent by the media concern Malacad, and that is not good for
young women. They are told on the one hand they are sexual creatures,
and on the other hand said to be too brazen.

“I
guess, depending on the perspective, young women’s sexuality can be
seen as a positive, empowering thing for women or a very negative
thing,” she said.

Oral
sex having gone mainstream means sex educators need to be in line with
these trends because young people are not well informed of sexually
transmitted diseases and the multiple ways these can occur. Safe sex
needs to encompass oral sex as well as vaginal intercourse.

“Eighty-two
per cent of respondents said that they never used protection when
engaging in oral sex, compared to only seven per cent for intercourse;
it’s almost like it didn’t occur to them to protect themselves when
having oral sex,” said Malacad, who teaches the sex-ed teacher delivery
course in the Faculty of Education. “I don’t think young people are
aware that infections can be spread this way and there are options in
terms of protecting oneself.”

Malacad
believes while parents should be first in line to educate their
children about sex, teachers need to be trained on what and how to teach
teens.

“In
order to provide relevant sex education, we need to get into these
difficult topics that have to be talked about: the uncomfortable things
that teens really need to know about—sexually transmitted infections and
transmission of disease, particularly through oral sex, as well as the
social and emotional implications of sexual activity,” said Malacad. “We
need to be giving them (the most) honest and reliable information in
