GHN News - The escalating crisis on the Korean peninsula is bringing responses from various nations of the world, but none more important than within Korea itself, whose press releases continue to update the world on its military status and maneuvers.
The Republic of Korea has announced that combined forces from both U.S. and Korean armies will be holding military exercises in the West Sea off the Korean Peninsula from November 28 to December 1.  This is the first of a series of joint military exercises that have been announced at the ROK-U.S. Foreign and Defense Ministers’ Meeting in July, the combined exercise will be joined by the ROK naval forces and the Aircraft Carrier Strike Group led by the USS George Washington.

The South Korean government maintains the combined exercise is a defensive operation for the purpose of strengthening its capability of deterring any attacks from North Korea.  The government continues to reiterate that these exercises were planned before the artillery attacks against Yeonpyeong Island.

The exercise will use a variety of military equipment to include destroyers, corvettes, frigates, a fast combat support ship (AOE) and anti-submarine warfare aircraft. The ROK-US forces conducting the exercise will focus on air defense and anti-surface warfare readiness.

The coastal waters have operationally been an area for the U.S. Navy to routinely conduct operations.  South Korea relates the fact the USS George Washington Carrier Strike Group carried out similar operations in the international waters west of the Korean Peninsula in October 2009.
