Samantha Torrence -  Free activities are always a blessing in the summer months when kids are at home and bored. Spending money on an outing everyday can be quite costly, but there are always alternatives, like a pony ride shown here.

In the city of Girard, Ohio the local community sponsors many free events for children, specifically at the Girard Free Library.  On Wednesday a local retired fireman Drew Aurillio sponsored free pony rides for local children.

The ponies named Cheyenne and Charlie Brown carried over 100 kids for the event. Children of all kinds lined up for a chance for a ride, some in summer clothes and flip flops while others had on full cowboy gear.  A water cooler was also provided for people in line on the hot summer day.  If the kids became tired waiting for the pony ride there was also a local fire truck they were allowed to tour.  The event was filled with the smiling faces of children, what a success!

No matter where you are in the country there are always free alternatives to costly outings. Here are a few things you can consider. Look into parks in the area, whether they are local or state run there are always activities. If there are no events available then pack a picnic lunch and just visit. There are always beaches in driving distance, whether it is a lake, a pond, a river, or the ocean. Check out the safety of the area, but what could be more fun than swimming the day away? If you are open to new experiences and wish your kids to be open as well, enroll them in local Vacation Bible Schools.  There is usually never a fee, tons of fun activities, and children have the opportunity to learn about different beliefs.  Local libraries and bookstores often have free events for children to encourage reading and learning.

Summer activities do not have to be costly to be fun, getting your children involved in the local community is a great way to spend the season.
