Air pollution worsening around the world

Carol Forsloff - With wildfires raging in Russia, volcanic activity in Hawaii and in
Iceland, scientists, in looking critically at global air
pollution, maintain  it is  far worse than expected.

Here are some of the conclusions from scientists at the University of Alabama at Huntsville about the present conditions of the world with reference to air pollution.

"Pollution from one country reaches other countries changing visibility,
air quality and climate. A concerted international framework is
necessary to address these issues to improve global air quality for the
entire human population," declare these scientists.  That is why what
happens in one part of the world can truly impact conditions in other
regions.

In looking at world patterns, they tell us, "With rising human
population and an increasingly urbanized world, air quality continues to
degrade significantly. While developed countries continue to invest in
newer technologies to reduce pollution, the developing countries face a
serious problem of air pollution related illnesses and deaths.

There
are not enough ground-based air quality networks to monitor, let alone
forecast next day air quality and therefore satellite remote sensing
will be the only viable option to monitor global air quality."

 Scientists
explain how they have arrived at these conclusions by using satellite
technologies to monitor global air pollution, then provide a
quantitative measure of air quality in urban areas.  They also use other
approaches including modeling and neural networks to make forecasts
about air pollution.

They explain
that in 1880 London was the only city with a population greater than 1
million. Today there are 281 cities exceeding 1 million populations.

Urbanization has therefore brought increased stress not only on resources but on air quality.

What does this mean for the world as a whole with respect to air pollution?

"Pollution from
one country reaches other countries changing visibility, air quality
and climate. A concerted international framework is necessary to address
these issues to improve global air quality for the entire human
population," is the scientists statement of warning on how people need
to cooperate and not deny the interrelationship that exists concerning
environmental events.
