Carol Forsloff - Freedom of speech is a protected right, but it is painful to watch it exercised to protest funerals of fallen soldiers and actually
celebrate their deaths.
Who would do this? Few people know that Westboro Baptist Church does not
just incidentally attend some of the funerals of those who have died
while serving in the military, but attend virtually all of them. The
impact of their protests is said to be devastating on military families
when the deaths of their loved ones are not mourned but celebrated by
people who call themselves Christians.
Why does the Westboro Baptist Church protest at funerals? This is what the website godhatesfags.com declares:
"GOD HATES AMERICA & IS KILLING
OUR TROOPS IN HIS WRATH.
Military funerals have become pagan orgies of
idolatrous blasphemy, where they pray to the
dunghill gods of Sodom & play taps to a fallen fool.
This message to be preached in respectful, lawful proximity
to the memorials."
After this statement the "church" gives the schedule for protests.
The church explains they do this because of the the decision made in Lawrence vs Texas
where sodomy was said by the Supreme Court not to be specifically in
relationship to the practice of gay sex and therefore was not against
the law.
To the Westboro members, this, and the fact that the military allows gays
to serve in their ranks, means for them America has violated God's law
that must be countered by protest. In these protests Westboro members praise the death of the soldiers and honor the instruments that
kill them.
The United Protectors of Fallen Soldiers was formed to counter the behavior
of the Westboro Church and others who protest the funerals of
soldiers. Members are asked to attend the funerals themselves in
counter protest.
The UPFS has 1.2 million members. But that is not enough, because funerals are held all over the world.
It turns out the need is to counter protest Westboro Baptist Church.
Susie Baruth, one of the principal organizers of UPOFS says, "Sometimes
there are few if any members available to be at one of the funerals to
support the families. The more members we have, the greater the
likelihood there will be someone available to attend one of the funerals
and counter protest the Westboro group."
So families and friends while mourning loved ones are obliged to walk past
or suffer through individuals who have arrived to applaud the deaths as
opposed to showing respect.
Members of United Protectors of Fallen Soldiers regularly update their members
when the funerals of military soldiers are being held so people from their organization can attend.
The organization regularly lists funerals that will be held in the near
future, that the Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) has on it's schedule to attend and protest.
The following is the upcoming schedule of funerals Baruth says she needs Leaders for and members to attend.
