A Saudi rescue team from the Saudi Civil Defense and Border Guards were sent under the directive of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz , saving the lives of 136 Pakistanis as flooding waters engulfed five villages. Teams from Saudi Arabia arrived in Pakistan on August 23 and 24.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, including the government, citizens and corporations, have donated more than $170 million to the people of Pakistan which has affected their country for more than a month.
Saudi Arabia has advanced $70 million in humanitarian aid, such as water, food, blankets and medical supplies at the instruction of King Abdullah.
A major campaign is being undertaken by Saudi Arabia to help provide relief materials as well as food through some of the hard-hit regions of Punjab and Kashir. It is estimated their trucks will provide food for 8000 families.
A total of 1000 trucks are being dispatched from Saudi Arabia to transport food and supplies to Pakistan, according to the Saudi Arabian embassy.
But United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has said this catastrophe is developing in a slow and awful way, as he wonders about the relative lack of response from the people of the world.
Ki-moon has asked, "Why has the world been slow to grasp the dimensions of this calamity? Perhaps because this is no made-for-TV disaster, with sudden impact and dramatic rescues. An earthquake may claim tens of thousands of lives in an instant; in a tsunami, whole cities and their populations vanish in a flash.
By contrast, this is a slow motion catastrophe — one that builds over time. And it is far from over."
