Will a genetically engineered fish end up on your dinner plate?

GHN News - The
FDA is ready to put a genetically engineered fish on America's dinner
plates this fall, with potentially harmful side effects and with
environmental groups advocating against it.

The

federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced August 25 that it
is considering approval of a genetically modified salmon known as the
frankenfish. The frankenfish was developed by a corporation called
AquaBounty.  The mission of the biotech corporation is to use technology
to move large-scale aquaculture forward and to increase profits.

The
FDA had 10 years to review AquaBounty's application but gave the public
only 10 days to examine it and put forth any objections it might have.

Those who have examined the fish say the modified poses a variety of threats.

Friends
of the Earth
joined a coalition of more than thirty groups to submit
171,645 comments from the public.  These statements demanded the FDA
reject this fish for human consumption.

Public
health organizations, chefs, restaurants, and tribal communities have
also advanced statements to the FDA, pressuring it to deny approval of

this frankenfish.
