Carol Forsloff - Today the biggest local news was not local at all. For those watching television over less than three weeks, but a time of intense activity, the world has seen the birth of something new in Egypt. It reminds us once again how precious democracy can be.
The news in many places around the United States are the freedom celebrations in Egypt. Those celebrations are spreadingeverywhere, from Cairo to Honolulu. This editor has heard from Arab friends in several places around the country, where joy is being felt, as Americans watch their families and friends in Egypt celebrate..
Even the ordinary American is touched, as folks in Louisiana are as well, as they wander through WalMart, stop and chat about the past few remarkable days.
In Queens, New York, a friend reported how crowds extended over a two-block area called "Little Egypt" to celebrate. Beverly Manley loves New York and says this is one of the more wonderful celebrations she has seen in that great city. She tells us its like a New Years celebration. Actually, Manley who once lived in Hawaii said, "It's like New Years eve and those Chinese New Year parties in Hawaii with everyone in the streets. Everyone was out mingling with everyone else with flags and balloons and making noise, with horns and noisemakers.
The news from Egypt is the news around the United States. The national news has been filled with all the details.
In a small town in Natchitoches, Louisiana folks become instantly part of the world, as they cluster as well around television sets, recognizing the joy folks have in freedom and how lucky it is to see the process and the joy when it comes to folks so far away and yet our neighbors too.
