Save the environment and go artificial this Christmas

John Henry — You don't have to forego a Christmas tree during the holidays in order to stick to your environmental ideals. The Christmas treeartificial trees of today aren't your grandparents' plastic horrors of yesterday. If you're in the market for an artificial tree, here are some great tips that will help you choose the perfect one for your family:

Size Matters

While you may want to impress your spouse and kids with the biggest, tallest artificial tree available, you've got to ask yourself if you have the room. If you've got a large living space and tall ceilings, a huge tree will look impressive. If you've got a small space and short ceilings, a huge tree will look ridiculous. Decide how much space you have and then go shopping for your tree. Make sure that your tree stops at least a foot before your ceiling starts; you'll want room for a great topper.

Where Will It Live?

Where are you going to put your tree? If you live in an apartment, you may want a table-top tree that won't take up any floor space. If you've got an empty corner in your family room, that may be your perfect spot. Deciding where you will put your tree before you purchase it will help to ensure that you buy the perfect artificial tree for your home.

Traditional Versus Funky

Where do your holiday decorating tastes lie? If you want a more traditional look, find a Douglas fir or other natural pine when it comes to your artificial tree. If you want a fun and funky look, you can easily find trees made of feathers, colored plastics and even metal. If you aren't ready to go for full funk, purchase a traditional type of tree and decorate it with fun ornaments. If you decide to go with a modern tree, keep in mind that your tastes may not run along the same path a few years from now, and you might be buying a new one.

Lights

One of the biggest hassles of the holiday season is unraveling Christmas lights and wrapping them around your tree. To solve this issue, manufacturers have created pre-lit trees. Be aware, however, that there is one drawback to these trees: If one light blows out, your whole tree may be dark. Look for trees that are decorated with LED lights, or trees that will not lose their light because one bulb goes dim. If you're the type of person that likes to go with a different color theme each year, look for a pre-lit tree with white lights or forego the pre-lit version altogether.

Storage

No one likes to think about the holidays coming to an end, but it's a sad reality. When you're shopping for your tree, keep in mind that you'll need to box it back up and store it somewhere. If you buy a tree that's too large, you may find it difficult to find space in your basement or attic. Take a look around your storage space before you go shopping and see what you'll have room for.

You don't have to cut down a tree each year to welcome Christmas into your home. The artificial trees of today are absolutely gorgeous. If you follow the tips above, you'll be sure to find an artificial tree that is perfect for your family.
