Leanne Jenkins---Trying to find that special gift for your mother or grandpa?  Much of the time the elderly get body lotions and soft pajamas for birthdays and holidays, but there are more possibilities for gift-giving that are practical and can make a difference in seniors living independently.  So here are five gift ideas that depending on your budget could be the gift that keeps on giving.

Balanced meals are hard to fix day after day with clean up chores and shopping issues, but there are products that can support the elderly getting the right nutrition.  For less than $100 at Costco, and other stores that sell household electronics, the NutriBullet is a great choice.  It removes the worries of chopping, grinding and combining foods to make that nutritious meal, as it pulverizes than turns into a drinkable and delicious combination that offers those fruits and vegetables and other important vitamins and minerals, so folks can prepare meals with greater ease.  And some of the foods that are harder to digest or who are either virtually tasteless or unappealing in a solitary way are made part of that taste-filled wonderful.  For example, kale, almonds, pineapple, beets, carrots and celery can be the meal that makes that difference.

Robotics are entering the home, little by little.  Cleaning is one of the more difficult daily activities for those with physical limitations.  Neato robotics is said to have the best robotic vacuum by reviewers.  These gadgets can clean the carpet and the floors, turn corners and even climb stairs in some instances.  The highest rated robotic vacuum is the Neato.  Reviewers say it has the best value and cleans rooms "logically."

Exercising on a budget is possible with various types of portable athletic equipment that allow older folks to participate in an activity that preserves health and independence.  A set of barbells with the weight provided by water, a portable exercise pedaler can help build both arm and leg strength and can be used on the floor or on a table.  This gift that keeps on giving costs about $35.

A product called a reacher allows an individual to reach objects both high and low from a standing or sitting position.  It can be that special device that allows physical function to increase for folks who have problems related to range of motion. Using a trigger handle, the reacher grips objects and can extend up to 48 inches.  These average approximately $35 and can be found at the local drugstore and places that sell medical supplies.

Bookholders allow those with mobility and or/visual defects to enjoy more leisure activities such as reading, writing, sewing, crafts and other activities that help maintain cognitive independence.  Some of these book holders have magnifiers, lights, may be swiveled and change position or even have slots that can hold a deck of cards so a one-handed individual can participate in the game.  Products like these can be as little as $10 to $15 for a padded lap desk or $75 for a specialized book holder that changes positions.

There are many other products that can be useful for seniors and serve as practical but important gifts.  And as for those body lotions, those gifts continue to be valuable aids as well, to aid the senior in preserving skin tone and elasticity.

Happy shopping every day, and for the next six days, finding gifts that not only offer that important gift but one that can make a difference in the lives of those for whom independence is the greatest gift of all.
