Carol Forsloff - Joan Baez sang the song "Diamonds and Rust," and the world knew she was thinking of her lost love, Bob Dylan. Well, it is
not easy to get over that first love, but science says it's a good idea to do it.
Joan Baez reminisced about her first real love, Bob
Dylan, in her song "Diamonds and Rust," a song that resonated with many people because it so typifies the feelings many people have with they think of that first love. The pictures of the two of them, Baez and Dylan, together, with her beautiful voice made the song appealing to many people, as Baez encapsulated how many people linger with their memories.
The Dylan - Baez romance ended, but the memories remained in her mind
and continue to thrive for those who think about them and remember the meaning of the song, what it was for them then and now.
Those who devote themselves to giving advice
say getting over your first love is incredibly difficult because at the
time you think that great romantic feeling will last forever. So it is
shattering when the love ends. It has its benefits, but it also needs
to be used properly, as a place for knowledge of relationships to begin
in earnest and a way to move on from them.
"One
day, you'll look back at your first love and realise that it was a great
dress rehearsal for subsequent relationships," is the best advice,
however, given the complexities of that human experience.
What contemporary research
demonstrates is that the impact of romance is similar for both men and
women in terms of setting the course for future relationships and the
effect on emotional health and well being as well. Scientists have
examined whether there are dramatic differences in how lovers fare
following a breakup and find they suffer or prosper in about the same
fashion.
Research on divorce
also shows that a parents divorce will effect how young people view
relationships and how permanent they become, in that relationships are
less trusted and less permanent with children of divorce.
Last year the Daily Mail
also covered first love and those memories. What they observed was a
scientific report had mentioned how it is important not to hang onto too
long those memories of first love, because in some cases individuals
make too many comparisons in new relationships.
But while old loves may linger in the minds of us all, especially that first real love, science says savor the memories but don't keep them as a barrier to moving on to a relationship that might last the rest of your life.
