GHN News - "Women don't stay on the market long because men are more motivated to commit," said Daniel Kruger, research assistant professor in the U-M School of Public Health. "They want to secure the relationship before some other guy gets her."
That's what researchers find in those areas where men outnumber women. When this happens, women get married younger, according to research from the University of Michigan after a tudy of 50 of the nations largest metropolitan areas.
Men and women have different reproductive agendas that are influenced by the statistics concerning the ratio of men to women.
Women want commitment from men, Kruger says, so they have a provider for a family. Men on the other hand look to build up their business or social status before making a commitment to marry.
Because men have the capacity to have more sexual partners and consequently children, they are less likely to settle down, except in those areas where women are less plentiful.
"When women are scarce they have more bargaining power and can ask for more," Kruger said. "So the guys who are qualified will snap up the women and get hitched, whereas others need more time to build up their resources and social status."
The fellow who will win out, when resources are scarce and women as well, is the guy with more resources.
"All things being equal, the guy with the better resources is going to win out," Kruger said.
The age gap between spouses also widens when there are fewer women than men, changing the norm of a three to four year difference to five or six years.
Las Vegas is one of those areas where men outnumber women. with six men for every five women.men, according to frisky females who want to know where men are plentiful. The median marrying age for men and women is 28.3 and 24.5, respectively in this metropolitan Nevada community. This is in contrast to Birmingham, Alabama where there are 11 women for every 10 men, so the ages for marrying for men and women is 26.9 and 26.7 respectively.
The demographical differences means socio-economic ones as well. Where men outnumber women, there is more sex trafficking and prostitution as well as increased violence. Sexually transmitted diseases increase where there are more women competing for men because of the increased competition.
The issues regarding gender differences and age of marrying is not just confined to the United States, as it has been noted in China where men outnumber women, that if a man doesn't have a partner by the age of 40, he likely won't. The situation is also likely to get worse according to social science statistics reported by Medical News Today with 24 million more men than women at the end of the next 10 years.
IBut where women outnumber men, such as in Alabama, the behaviors are much different. Men will stay single because there isn't the pressure to settle down with a single woman.
