their example on September 11, now nine years past the bombing of the
World Trade Towers and in a fashion that worries people.
It turns out the wave of people rushing to do this could be reported on various
channels in excessive ways, religious leaders and the Council on
American-Islamic Relations seek to prevent. They have asked the media
to be professional and responsible in its reporting.

So fair and
balanced is what CAIR expects from the newspapers, television, radio and
Internet news stories so as not to fan the flame of intolerance, as is
feared may occur on that day. That's because of the extensive coverage
of the negative remarks and those opposing the building of the mosque in
New York City.

"Just as all
Muslims should not be blamed for the actions of a few extremists,
neither should all Christians or all Americans be blamed for the
intentionally offensive actions of the Dove World Outreach Center," said
CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad. "Pastor Terry Jones represents
nothing but an extremist fringe."

This
announcement comes on the heels of Terry Jones, the instigator of "Burn
the Koran Day, " arrest for child pornography. According to NBC news on
Wednesday, August 4, Jones was arrested for sharing pictures of
children in various states of nudity over the popular file-sharing
network Limewire.

Awad maintains
this anticipated event of "Burn the Koran" comes from extremists seeking
cheap publicity. To that extent, it wouldn't be alone, given the
Westboro Baptist Church consistently protesting America military
funerals declaring the military men and women deserved to die.

CAIR this week distributed a television public service announcement (PSA) that implicitly challenges the Quran burnings.
Awad noted that the National Association of Evangelicals,
the largest evangelical group in the United States, said that the
planned book burning shows, "disrespect for our Muslim neighbors and
would exacerbate tensions between Christians and Muslims throughout the
world." The National Council of Churches issued a similar statement.

The Gainesville
Florida Mayor, Craig Lowe, has denounced the book burnings declaring the
scheduled protest to be an "embarrassment to our community" and has
denied the church its request for a demonstration.
Gainesville Mayor Craig Lowe condemned the church's intention
to burn the Koran, saying it is a "tiny fringe group and an
embarrassment to our community." The town even denied the church the
required permit for the burning. Interfaith leaders are organizing activities in Gainesville to counter Dove World leader's protest in burning the Koran.

"We state clearly
the act of burning the sacred scripture of Islam has no place in our
faith, our religious communities, our town, or in our nation,"said
religious leaders in Gainesville. It is a statement echoed by other
religious leaders in anticipation of an event many see defiance of
religious liberty and tolerance.
