Eating soon after stressful incident increases weight gain

by Carol Forsloff - Stress can kill, but it can also make you fat, according to new
research, telling us that it creates metabolic changes that can cause
obesity.

Science has long said that stress has a negative impact long-term on

humans, although certain types of stress like public speaking job
interviews and relationship pressures will have a different effect.
That serious stress from wars or injuries can cause a lack of appetite,
but the everyday types can actually increase it..

The study was done by the Departments of Psychiatry and Biomedical
Engineering at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and
reported by the American Physiological Society.
It is the first of its kind to look at meal patterns and their
relationship to chronic social stress.  Stress is experienced daily,
followed by recovery periods; but when a person has a stressful
experience, follows it by eating, it is then the metabolism may change,
creating the weight gain, especially in the abdomen.

The American Physiological Society (APS; ) has been an integral part of this discovery process since it was established in 1887.
